Angel

Check out my angel wings!
You are an angel Phia!
Thanks Gabriel!
What about me ?
You are Isabella!
Mom's notes- Many people believe people with Down syndrome are happy all of the time... This is of course not true. Gabriel is a happy little man, he is also opinionated, strong willed, stubborn and crafty. Gabriel gets angry, sad, happy, mad, and every other emotion we all have. Today proves he can be a little snot when he does not get his way.

Sleep, or not

I don't want to go to sleep!
I don't want to go to sleep MORE!
I don't want to wake up, unless it is between the hours of 12am and 5am!
Mom's notes - Person First Language (necessity or bull?)
The lack of person first language to a parent of a child with different needs is often like listening to nails being dragged down a chalkboard. I first learned about person first language in my college special education classes. Person first language was described like this- The person is before the disability. Gabriel is a little man who has Down syndrome. That Down's boy is not Gabriel.
Many in society have not been taught person first language. You can hear or read the lack of knowledge about person first language almost daily. In fact the video of the kids on the news for Christine's Photography last week did not use person first language.
So, is person first language a necessity or bull?  I know that Gabriel is a person who happens to have been born with Down syndrome.

Down syndrome awareness month

Phia, October is Down Syndrome Awareness month.
At least we look good for it Isabella!
Yes, yes we do Phia.
Mom's notes- In honor is Down Syndrome Awareness Month I am going to write a little blurb about our journey each evening after the kids post.

A person does not need words to get their point across. Those of you who have been following our lives for a while know that until recently Gabriel rarely spoke real words. Six months ago we understood what Gabriel wanted most of the time even though he was without words. Words are an amazing tool but not the only form of communication. Gabriel still struggles to find words he needs when he is emotion filled or hurting. He goes back to his nonverbal communication on a regular basis at this point in time.
